The Society Of Classical Poets Literary Magazine

The Society of Classical Poets is reviving poetry with rhyme, meter, and good character. Since the Society was founded in 2012, we have grown from a blog with weekly posts to a major non-profit organization publishing the highest quality poetry, as well as insightful essays, educational resources, and the most exquisite art. You could publish it anywhere else or sell it to any publication as desired. The first step in publishing is to have it published on the Society’s homepage and we will check with you first to confirm if we have your permission to do so. Alternatively, when submitting you may add a note stating “do not publish if not a winner.” If your poem places in the competition it may be published by the Society during or before the month of February (you do not have the choice of non-publication without losing your place).

With this in mind, the Society of Classical Poets is a 501 non-profit organization formed in 2012 as a group of poets dedicated to the revival and proliferation of good, new poetry. Since I questioned the Keystone Scops in public, I have been called a “hillbilly,” a “failed editor” who publishes “greeting card verse,” etc.

The Society of Classical Poets website receives millions of views every year. Visitors read engaging, beautiful, topical verse that enlivens Western Civilization’s great conversation. That conversation continues in our annual printed Journal drawn from the best poetry published on our website. The Society is a 501 nonprofit organization, based in Mount Hope, New York, dedicated to the continuation of Beauty, Goodness, Truth, and excellent poetry. I have taken my family, including two small children, to see Shen Yun for the last few years. (You can read my poetry about it “I Love the Dance” and “Upon Seeing Shen Yun.”) But there is more to this story than just another individual review or a wonderful family experience.

In 2020, the Society’s online symposium featured A.M. Juster, a major formalist poet as well as the former Social Security Administration Commissioner under the Obama and Bush administrations. It is the largest organization in the world dedicated to publishing classical style English-language poetry. Poetry is an art form in which human language is used for its aesthetic qualities in addition to, or instead of, its notional and semantic content. Poetry writing is also a desire for plenty of writers.

I have read a number of Anderson’s poems over the years, and I can honestly say that none of them ever struck me as very good, much less exceptional.

Whether “The Swallows of La Cienega” is a beautiful love poem is a matter of opinion. I would not give it high marks myself, so I tend to doubt Salemi’s abilities as a literary critic. But to watch the discussion of a “love” poem disintegrate into expressions of complete disdain for the victims of ethnic cleansing and genocide, while their “Christian” abusers and murderers were being showered with glory, was to see poetry become an instrument of racism and intolerance. And that seems to be par for the course with the Keystone Scops. The Society of Classical Poets is a nonprofit organization that is dedicated to reviving traditional poetry. It typically publishes, online and in its annual journal, a variety of poetry that uses rhyme and meter.

The first SCP poet mentioned as a candidate for Poet Laureate was Leo Yankevich, who calls himself a Polish count and claims to live in a castle in Poland. Such things apparently mean no more to the Keystone Scops than the stopping power of real bullets would matter to the Keystone Kops. Anderson seems like a journeyman to me; thus I cannot take his nomination seriously. Beginning in 2019, in addition to the daily posting of formal poetry on its web site, the Society of Classical Poets has held public events for the promotion of traditional poetry with meter and rhyme. They will also be posting a review of my latest poetry book Selected Verse – Heroes and Wonders in mid-May, so I look forward to reading what they think of that collection.

For instance, the famous Chinese novel, Dream of the Red Chamber by Cao Xueqin, is entirely framed by a Buddhist monk and Taoist priest talking to each other and by ideas of karma, predestination, and reincarnation. The other famous Chinese novel, Journey to the West by Wu Cheng’en, takes pilgrimaging Buddhist monks as its main characters—just imagine if Prince Hamlet, Robinson Crusoe, and the Count of Monte Cristo were all Christian monks! That is the depths of the spirituality of Chinese culture before communism. It is also paramount to realize that Falun Dafa in itself is representative of Chinese culture, which was always deeply spiritual before communism took hold in 1949 and actively started destroying traditional culture during the Cultural Revolution of the 1960s and 1970s. Rhyme and other traditional techniques are encouraged as well. Look at the weighty responsibilities that he was shouldering, day and night, since he had to look after the health and welfare of so many people, and decide what was in the best interests of society as a whole! I had the opportunity to go to Capitol Hill and meet with my local representatives and tell them about all the amazing STEM activities that I do with my students. I also had the chance to collaborate with 200 high school teachers and learn new exciting ways to make science fun in the classroom. Citizens are still broadly positive about the place of U.S. scientific achievements and its impact on society, but slightly more are negative than five years ago. And, while a majority of scientists think it is a good time for science, they are less upbeat than they were five years ago. Most scientists believe that policy regulations on land use and clean air and water are not often guided by the best science. Kudos to the Society for its’ efforts towards making the Research Educator weekend in Washington DC (Sept. 30 to Oct. 2, 2016 ) a productive, collaborative and successful event. For me personally, it was a great opportunity to network and brainstorm with teachers from around the country and to learn of the mechanics of the different science fairs that challenge our students. We are also grateful to the Society for giving us the opportunity to bring additional resources to students; especially to underserved and underrepresented students and to inner city schools and Title One schools.

A non-profit organization based in Washington, DC,Science Service has encouraged students, parents, teachers, and communities to explore the vast world of science. Throughpublications and programs, science fairs and scholarship competitions, Society for Science & the Public helps young peopleutilize and strengthen their knowledge in science, math, and engineering. Society for Science and the Public is an organization that has brought out the best of my students, as well as of me, in terms of education in scientific research.

The Society relies heavily on its corporate partners and nationwide membership to raise more than $22 million annually to fund its programs. As a high school gifted support teacher, this non-profit keeps me in-the-know on all topics science related, and does so with so many varied resources! My students and I can utilize science news magazines and associated database to research any topic that they are interested in, and it pushes our knowledge further along. Additionally, they run the most prestigious and professional science competitions in the world, and turn so many students into scientists.

Today, about half of AAAS scientists (52%) say this is good time for science, down 24 percentage points from three-quarters (76%) in 2009. These modest changes over time have occurred among both Republicans as well as Democrats . However, Republicans’ views about the effect of science on health care and food have changed more than those of Democrats. When it comes to food, 62% of Americans say science has had a mostly positive effect, while 34% say science has mostly had a negative effect on the quality of food. The balance of opinion is a bit less rosy on this issue compared with 2009 when positive views outstripped negative ones by a margin of 66% to 24%.

Many organizations talk about empowering teachers and students, but this organization does it better than any other I have yet encountered. They spend time and resources allowing students and teachers to gather, share ideas, and learn from each other through professional development conferences and competitions geared toward helping students participate in scientific research in secondary school. I attended one of the conferences as a teacher as was impressed at how many of the sessions were run by my fellow teachers who had really fantastic ideas and had experienced a lot of success in their programs. They trust that teachers have innate desires to help students succeed and give them the tools necessary to reach their potential.

As a public school teacher for the past 12 years, I have not encountered an organization that has given as much opportunity to my students as they have. Though scientists hold mostly positive assessments of the state of science and their scientific specialty today, they are less sanguine than they were in 2009 when Pew Research conducted a previous survey of AAAS members. The downturn is shared widely among AAAS scientists regardless of discipline and employment sector. Citizens’ and scientists’ views diverge sharply across a range of science, engineering and technology topics.

And, some results from the survey of AAAS scientists will be presented in a follow-up report in mid-February. When it comes to climate change and evolution, a majority of adults see scientists as generally in agreement that the earth is getting warmer due to human activity (57%) or that humans have evolved over time (66%), though a sizeable minority see scientists as divided over each. Perceptions of where the scientific community stands on both climate change and evolution tend to be associated with individual views on the issue. Similarly, a majority of adults says the effect of science on the quality of U.S. health care, food and the environment is mostly positive as was also the case in 2009. The share saying that science has had a negative effect in each area has increased slightly.

Respond promptly to and act on complaints brought to its attention by the BBB Wise Giving Alliance and/or local Better Business Bureaus about fund raising practices, privacy policy violations and/or other issues. Include on any charity websites that solicit contributions, the same information that is recommended for annual reports, as well as the mailing address of the charity and electronic access to its most recent IRS Form 990. Submit to the organization’s governing body, for its approval, a written report that outlines the results of the aforementioned performance and effectiveness assessment and recommendations for future actions. An organization shall have a minimum of three evenly spaced meetings per year of the full governing body with a majority in attendance, with face-to-face participation. A conference call of the full board can substitute for one of the three meetings of the governing body.

Between the World Wars, Science Service sponsored Science Clubs of America, founded by Watson Davis. In 2008, Science Service was renamed as the Society for Science & the Public , in order to better reflect the mission of the organization to advocate for science in the public interest. Science News for Students Science News for Students is an award-winning online publication dedicated to providing age-appropriate, topical science news to learners, parents and educators. The Society for Science and Broadcom Foundation are excited to announce the Top 300 MASTERS in the nation’s premier middle school STEM competition. Scientists’ views about the impact of research on government regulations in each domain tend to be associated with their views about the state of the overall science environment.

This entity is needed for scientific research to continue to flourish among the younger generations, and thus develop the scientists of the future. The Middle School Research Teachers Conference brings 50 middle school STEM teachers to Washington, DC, for a weekend of peer-led professional development. The conference focuses on leading students in original research projects that can be entered in local science fairs, eCybermission, and other science research competitions.

From the travel arrangements to the venue itself; the wonderful accommodations, keynote speakers and opportunities to network. I left the conference feeling revitalized, appreciated and equipped with new ideas to improve upon the way that I engage my students on a daily basis. There are times when a mere thank you seems inadequate and this is one of those occassions. Nevertheless, a heartfelt thank you is being extended to the dozens of people who made this conference possible. Advocate ProgramEducators support underrepresented middle and high school students as they choose a project and enter their research in STEM competitions. This unique program pairs educators and other science mentors with a small group of students to help them enter their own science research projects in local and regional fairs, which may lead to students entering our national and international competitions.

Her passion for scientific research and the thrill of competition made her a lifelong science fair junkie. Under her leadership as Publisher, the Society was able to save its flagship magazine, Science News, an independent source of science journalism since 1921. Ajmera achieved this by creating a new education pillar for the magazine, expanding access of Science News to 5,000 high schools across the country. All these presenters actual science research teachers who have been working in this area for quite some time.

As a high school student from a rural county in North Florida, I was an international science fair winner forty years ago. I wanted other students in my little rural county high school to have the same opportunity I had, so I returned there to teach science courses with a research component.

The Society for Science names 66 educators tasked with guiding students in science research and competitions through the Advocate Program. The Society strives to educate and inspire the next generation of scientists, engineers and innovators, and supports full representation of all identities in STEM fields. Society for Science & the Public today announced that National Geographic Society will be a sponsor of the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair , the world’s largest pre-college science and engineering competition. The general public tends to hold mixed views about the degree to which they believe there is scientific consensus on three hot-button science topics — the “Big Bang” theory, climate change and evolution. The modest difference over time stems from more expressing an opinion today than did so five years ago. A 2013 Pew Research report found the military at the top of the list of 10 occupational groups seen as contributing “a lot” to society (78%), followed by teachers (72%), medical doctors (66%), scientists (65%) and engineers (63%).

Partisan and ideological differences were found in views about the contribution of scientists and engineers but not in views about medical doctors. Among scientists, the public’s knowledge about science — or lack thereof — is widely considered to be a major (84%) or minor (14%) problem for the field. The only one of 13 issues compared where the differences between the two groups are especially modest is the space station.Fully 64% of the public and 68% of AAAS scientists say that the space station has been a good investment for the country; a difference of four percentage points. A majority of the general public (57%) says that genetically modified foods are generally unsafe to eat, while 37% says such foods are safe; by contrast, 88% of AAAS scientists say GM foods are generally safe. The gap between citizens and scientists in seeing GM foods as safe is 51 percentage points.

Similarly, more say science has had a positive (62%) than negative (31%) effect on the quality of the environment today. But, the balance of opinion on this issue has shifted somewhat compared with 2009 when 66% said science had a positive effect and 23% said it had a negative effect. Partisan groups tend to hold similar views of U.S. scientific achievements and, the drop in ratings of U.S. scientific achievements since 2009 has occurred across the political spectrum. A number of the questions asked in these new surveys repeat questions that Pew Research Center asked citizens and scientists in 2009. In some areas, like energy, the differences between the groups do not follow a single direction — they can vary depending on the specific issue. For example, 52% of citizens favor allowing more offshore drilling, while fewer AAAS scientists (32%), by comparison, favor increased drilling.

Make available to all, on request, complete annual financial statements prepared in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles. When total annual gross income exceeds $500,000, these statements should be audited in accordance with generally accepted auditing standards. For charities whose annual gross income is less than $500,000, a review by a certified public accountant is sufficient to meet this standard. For charities whose annual gross income is less than $250,000, an internally produced, complete financial statement is sufficient to meet this standard. Have a board policy of assessing, no less than every two years, the organization’s performance and effectiveness and of determining future actions required to achieve its mission. The Public Service Award is presented to individuals and groups each year that have contributed substantially to increasing public understanding of science and engineering.

The Society is granting $165,000 in microgrants through the STEM Action Grant program to 38 creative, community driven organizations, working to bolster and improve outcomes for groups that have been historically left behind in STEM education and careers. Here are 10 tips — all based on science — about what tends to help us learn and remember most effectively. Six-in-ten U.S. adults say they would prefer to live in a community with larger homes with greater distances to retail stores and schools. We are also grateful to the team at Princeton Survey Research International who led the data collection efforts for the two surveys. The fieldwork for both surveys was conducted by Princeton Survey Research Associates International. Contact with AAAS members invited to participate in the survey was managed by AAAS staff with the help of Princeton Survey Research Associates International; AAAS also covered part of the costs associated with mailing members.

Society for Science & the Public has provided services that empowers me to bridge equity gaps in science education. This nonprofit helped bring teachers together from across the country to share experiences, ideas, and grow as educators. Students who did not originally consider science careers have had opportunities that they would have not otherwise considered. I am thankful for the SSP and their programs, especially the Advocates Grant Program.

Our outreach and equity programs aim to have a substantial impact on underserved students interested in STEM fields but who may not yet have the resources and mentors to get started on original research. Society for Science & the Public has a staff of 86, with a growing communications function. Under new leadership from Maya Ajmera, the President and CEO, the organization is in a growth mode, adding staff at a rapid pace to support the growing programs.

Attending this conference has lit a fire inside of me to doggedly pursue every opportunity I can to provide Independent Research opportunities for students. As an SSP Advocate, I have had special training and support that has led to me being able to help dozens of economically disadvantaged students learn about research that can be entered into science fair competitions. Last year I had one student make it to the International Science and Engineering Fair and it changed his life for the better by helping him earn college scholarships. Other students are returning to continue pursuing the dream of solving a real world problem like field testing for Lyme Disease in ticks. Without the help and support of SSP I would not be as actively involved in my community trying to ensure awareness of and access for all kids to science fair competitions. Society for the Science and the Public has dedicated years of time, resources, and money to schools and students across the country with the focus to promote intense, appropriate, and necessary science exploration at the middle school and high school levels.

Since 1921, the Society has conveyed the excitement of science and research directly to the public through our award-winning publications and, since 1942, through our world-class science education competitions. Science News, our flagship publication, meets the needs of readers who have an interest in cutting-edge science, math, and technology and seek an accurate digest of current research in a variety of fields without the heavy jargon of a scientific journal. The Society works to ensure that young people have a chance to become scientifically literate and pursue a career as a scientist or engineer if that is what they want to do.

I have been bringing students to the ISEF for decades and enjoy watching the continued success of the participants after they return home motivated to pursue higher education and careers with confidence. SSP advocates science education and literacy through supporting students, teachers, and the public. They make the latest research obtainable to every person through their Science News magazine and organize major scientific fairs for high school and middle school students. It is these competitions that help fuel the excitement in STEM fields for kids and encourage them to dream big so that they can be the scientists of our future. The society for science has done far more for science teachers and science programs around the country than any other non-profit I know.

The Society for Science and the Public is a superb, unique, non-profit organization whose mission to be “a champion for science, dedicated to expanding scientific literacy, effective STEM education and scientific research” is realized on a daily basis in many different ways. We were given a grant for our science research class which helped acquire equipment and academic material. Also, it has provided a subscription to Science News in High school for the last two years. With these resources we have been able to keep up to date and complete our research projects on time.

The High School Research Teachers Conference brings 200 research teachers of all experience levels together to share best practices, troubleshoot challenges, and learn more about Society for Science & the Public and the Regeneron Science Talent Search. Our flagship publication, Science News, continues to set the standard for science journalism. Each year, only 40 finalists are selected from the nearly 2,000 students who enter our Science Talent Search, the longest-running and most prestigious science and math competition for high school seniors in the country. Your membership promotes scientific literacy and gives millions the opportunity to fall in love with science.

It opened up abundant opportunities for both of us to stay connected with all participants in real time, throughout our lives. The deliberations at the conference were extraordinary; each and every presentation was well thought out and delivered. Invariably, all presentations were a real world interdisciplinary experience – including learning as a team. The interactions, connections, and networking offered by the conference have expanded my horizons. My ability to make a difference has enhanced and it also increased the strength of my vision to empower the future of this world in my classroom.

This program has fostered, challenged and most importantly rewarded the best and encouraged the rest of the ISEF participants. Upon transitioning from the teaching profession we have been involved with SSP in varying other volunteer capacities . We most definitely and fullhearted see the immense impact this organization has had and is having on our youth. Our own three personal children were finalist for four years each and as a result impart of this program they have all become professional individuals in the Scientific and/or Engineering community.

Society for Science and the Public administers numerous excellent student programs but the one we have been involved with and is the most familiar to us is the International Science and Engineering Fair . This program is awesome because it innovates, invigorates, challenges and supports students and teachers alike in their Inquiry quest for achieving Educational Excellence. We have been involved with ISEF since 1976 until present either sponsoring many students as finalist and/or observers and in the last twelve years we have served as volunteers.

All other costs of conducting the pair of surveys were covered by the Pew Research Center. Pew Research bears all responsibility for the content, design and analysis of both the AAAS member survey and the survey of the general public. Some 59% of AAAS scientists say this is a good or very good time to begin a career in their specialty, down from 67% in 2009.
